Delivered from the Martin Omaha plant. Next listed at Omaha, Nebraska (ATC) from 4/2/44. Then went to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 6/2/44), and then to Homestead Army Air Field, Florida (from 19/2/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 21/2/44. The record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe) on 20/2/44, and, SOXO R (Europe) on 7/3/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 575th BS on 2/5/44. Shot down by Me-109 and Fw-190 fighters of IV/JG-3, three miles East of Ahrweiler, Germany on the 23/12/44 Ahrweiler Railway Viaduct mission. The aircraft flown by 1st Lt. James F Gatlin Jnr, was shot down after leaving the target, and plunged earthwards with the right engine stopped and the left engine on fire. The bombardier, 1st Lt. John J Adair was the only crew member to survive. It is believed the other crew members may have bailed out, but were killed on the ground by SS troops, or by angry German locals.
