Mission No. 107
30 Jun 1944
Station: 166
Target: Road and RR Intersection at Condre Du Nord, France
Time Of Take-Off: 06:18 / Time Over Target: 08:38 / Time Landed: 10:02
36 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Road and Railroad Intersection at Condre Du Nord, France. Aircraft were loaded with 16x250LB General Purpose bombs. Bombing will be done by flights and P-47s of IX Fighter Command will furnish escort and area cover.
Weather conditions enroute were 10/10 cloud and also at the briefed target, 9/10 over target bombed. The formation made 4 bombing runs on the briefed target but, unable to make a successful run, departed. It then seems that the 1st box picked out a target of opportunity and released their bombs after making 2 runs at 9,000 feet.
Bombs from the 1st box bracketed the aiming point cutting all tracks and roadway. At least 20 goods wagons in the sidings were hit. 1 large and 3 small buildings southeast of the tracks received direct hits. Many bombs fell in open fields. Results were rated as EXCELLENT. The 2nd box did not drop.
Many crews suggested that allied barrage balloons should be pulled down over French coast when formation goes that low. One crew sarcastically remarked "Brilliant news ! Open mess hall before pre-briefing."
