SOURCE MATERIAL (MAINLY SPECIAL ORDERS)

The documents listed below were sent to me (or were papers of my own) in connection with the project to list the World War II Aircrews of the 391st Bombardment Group, a B-26 Martin Marauder group, which operated in the European Theater of Operations.

Most of these documents are military orders, issued by various units, and they served as source documents for the aircrew project. Some, however, particularly those dated after the end of the European war, did not contribute to the crew lists but are included as being related to the B-26 or 391st personnel and having some historical value.

This website contains two lists of the same orders. Both list the date, order number, and issuing headquarters. One lists the extract paragraph number and number of pages involved. It might be interesting for the young reader to understand why there were extracts of orders. Documents, such as orders, were all typed on manual typewriters, much work for the young airmen typists. There were not any copy machines nor word processors, as we know them today. There were copy processes, most notably the mimeograph machine, but these were only in major headquarters. I suspect that 391st Group Headquarters had such a machine, but I doubt that the squadrons did. Mimeograph copies varied widely in quality, as special forms had to be typed carefully and the machine operated skillfully (by hand crank on the earlier machines). There was also a photostat process which produced a black background with white lettering, but it was not used for these kinds of documents. If Paragraph 2 applied to one unit, and Paragraph 3 to another, the number of copies was reduced by making an extract of Par. 2 for the first unit, and of Par. 3 for the second. Another fact of administrative life in those days was that the typists made mistakes. I have found many mistakes in the source orders, and it is not always clear what the correct answer is.

The documents are listed in chronological order. Many orders from the 391st BG, the Replacement Training Units, enroute stations, 9th Bomb Division, and Wing Headquarters have not come to light. Any one of them could add greatly to the aircrew report. I would appreciate receiving copies of any such orders that may be in the hands of anyone visiting our website.
