36 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Railroad Viaduct at Maintenon, France. Aircraft were loaded with 2x2000LB General Purpose bombs. After take off, Hanlon in a/c 812 turned back just south of North Foreland because his right engine was running rough and cutting out. The rest of the formation continued on to Dungeness to rendezvous with their escort of P-47s of IX Fighter Command. However, crews reported that no fighters showed up on time.
Weather was 7/10 cumulus clouds at base improving to CAVU over the target area.
Although the formation encountered no FLAK over the target area; they experienced Heavy, Weak, Accurate FLAK at St. Saveur, Heavy, Weak, Inaccurate FLAK at Dreux A/D; and Heavy, Weak, Inaccurate FLAK at Chartres. 2 aircraft received battle damage.
Bombs from the 1st flight of the 1st box fell in a tight concentration about 500 feet west of the aiming point. Results were rated as GOOD. The 2nd flight's fell in a tight concentration about 250 feet east of the aiming point, with 3 direct hits on the viaduct and the road beneath it. Results were rated as EXCELLENT. The 3rd flight's fell in a tight concentration about 200 feet north of the aiming point, with 4 direct hits on the viaduct and the road beneath it. Results were rated as EXCELLENT.
Bombs from the 1st flight of the 2nd box fell in a tight concentration about 300 feet west of the aiming point in a wooded area with possible hits on one road. Results were rated as GOOD. The 2nd flight's fell about 7,500 feet southeast of the aiming point in open fields. Results were rated as GROSS. The 3rd flight's fell about 1,100 feet north of the aiming point across railroad sidings and two secondary roads. 7 railroad tracks were also cut. Results were rated as POOR.
