Mission No. 67
24 May 1944
Station: 166
Target: Airfield at Beauvais/Tille, France
Time Of Take-Off: 09:30 / Time Over Target: 11:22 / Time Landed: 13:16
On the first mission of the day, 38 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Airfield at Beauvais/Tille, France. Each aircraft was loaded with 8x500LB General Purpose bombs with bombing to be done by box. The formation headed for rendezvous with the 386th Bomb Group at radio splasher beacon no. 8 where they would then follow them the target. P-47s were to provide umbrella cover over the target area.
Weather conditions enroute were poor with 4 tenths cloud cover and a slight haze, although this improved over the target area with visibility becoming 8 to 10 miles.
304 bombs were dropped on the target with results rated as good to excellent. A number of crews in the 2nd box reported seeing their fighter escort engaging enemy fighters over the target area.
On the return journey, 15 aircraft were damaged by FLAK as the formation passed near Elbeuf. Stalnaker's ship (847) had its hydraulic system and tail turret shot out. The ammunition tracks in the rear fuselage of Wilkinson's ship (855) were splintered and the waist windows were blown out. The hydraulic lines in Sullivan's ship (853) were damaged and fuel was leaking elsewhere. Fleck's ship (843) also had its hydraulic lines shot out and the crew had to manually lower the landing gear by using the emergency hand pump.
Jacobs crew commented at debriefing "Let's start invasion tomorrow, we want to see Paris, we're tired of England."
