31 B-26 plus 3 window and 1 Pathfinder aircraft loaded with 16x250LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack an enemy Defended Area at Echtz, Germany. The 29th Tactical Air Command will furnish area cover for the 391st group. 1 Pathfinder blew a tire just before take off and was unable to get into the air. Phalon and crew in a/c 427-B turned back to base after their automatic prop governor malfunctioned.
Weather conditions enroute were 8/10 clouds with tops at 7,000 feet, becoming 7 to 10/10 clouds, changing to 10/10 cloud with tops at 8,000 feet over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute or over the target area.
Both boxes bombed with the Pathfinder through 10/10 clouds, so not photo observations were available.
Crews reported white vapor trails (jagged and vertical) in front of the formation in the vicinity of Cologne.
