Mission No. 188
19 Nov 1944
Station: A-73
Target: Railroad Bridge at Sinzig, Germany
Time Of Take-Off: 14:45 / Time Over Target: 00:00 / Time Landed: 17:00
36 B-26 aircraft loaded with 4x1000LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack an enemy Railroad Bridge at Sinzig, Germany. The target is a single span steel truss bridge, 280 feet long, 26 feet wide carrying a double track over river, water gap 100 feet. Its destruction will hamper the enemy in shifting supplies and reinforcements to vital areas.
9th Tactical Air Command will be providing area cover. Proctor and crew in a/c 839 took off late and were unable to catch up with the formation.
Weather conditions were 10/10 clouds with tops at 15,000 feet enroute and over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute or over the target area.
Due to the weather conditions, no attack was made.
A number of crews reported that icing on the wings and control surfaces caused problems, some even reported stalling ! Jiminez and crew in 820-S landed at B-51 due to one of their engines cutting out and returned to base the day after. Leavitt and crew in 620-B landed at A-82 and returned to base 2 days later.
