Mission No. 95
13 Jun 1944
Station: 166
Target: Road Junction at Marigny, France
Time Of Take-Off: 19:15 / Time Over Target: 20:53 / Time Landed: 22:40
36 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Road Junction at Marigny, France. 4 flights were loaded with 8x500LB General Purpose bombs and 2 flights 16x250LB General Purpose bombs, with bombing to be done by flights of 6 aircraft at 8,000 feet or below the cloud layer. Allied aircraft were providing area cover over the target.
The weather conditions enroute and over the target area were 4/10 clouds with tops at 8,000 feet and bases at 4,000 feet. Consequently, bombing was carried out at an altitude of 8,000 to 9,000 feet.
The bombs of the 1st flight of the 1st box fell in a tight concentration across the aiming point, with hits observed on a road junction of 4 main roads and buildings northeast of the aiming point. The bombs of the 2nd flight fell along a road about 1900 yards from the aiming point. The bombs of the 3rd flight fell in a broken string about 1,200 feet north of the aiming point across a road junction about 3 miles from desired aiming point. Results were rated as EXCELLENT, GROSS, and POOR respectively.
The bombs of the 1st flight of the 2nd box fell on the aiming point, with hits scored across the road junction and continued to walk beside the road in open fields northeast of the desired aiming point. The bombs of the 2nd flight fell in a string about 600 feet northeast of desired aiming point in open fields. Crews reported making 2 bombing runs on the target. The bombs of the 3rd flight fell in a loose concentration about 1,200 feet north of the aiming point with hits across 2 roads north of the aiming point. Results were rated as EXCELLENT, FAIR, and POOR respectively.
No FLAK or enemy aircraft were encountered.
At debriefing, some crews stated that they preferred the old schedule for flying combat missions i.e. 2 days on, 2 days off. Comments from later mission debriefs, seem to give the reason that the new schedule (currently unknown) makes it less easy to get passes for leave.
