Mission No. 104
22 Jun 1944
Station: 166
Target: Fuel Dump at Foret D'Andaine, France
Time Of Take-Off: 19:35 / Time Over Target: 21:12 / Time Landed: 22:53
36 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Fuel Dump at Foret D'Andaine, France. Aircraft were loaded with 16x250LB General Purpose bombs. P-47s of IX Fighter Command would be providing escort for the 322 and 391 groups. Bombing was to be done by spread boxes.
Weather conditions enroute were 3/10 cirrus clouds at 20,000 feet clearing to CAVU over the target area.
The majority of the bombs from the 1st box fell inside the target area in an extended pattern across 3 east-west roads and in woods.
Nearly half of the bombs from the 2nd box fell in the target area, extending outside about 1,500 feet west from nearest edge of target area, in an extended pattern across 2 east-west roads and in woods.
Although no FLAK or enemy aircraft were encountered enroute and over the target area, crews reported that they observed the largest number of FLAK bursts over Caen in their experience. One B-26 (from another group, possibly the 344th) was observed going down over Caen at 21:20.
There were many comments at debriefing about both messes and the food. The Alexander crew suggested that mess Officers and Sgts be sent to other bases to see what they have. (The messes) Run out of food before combat crews eat. Replacement crews needed. The Baehr crew commented "P-47 losing alt and leaving black smoke trail as left coast at St. Aubin ??, lost sight of him. 1 bomb brought back, hung up, would not release. Fires and smoke in Caen area, intense heavy barrage west of Caen, most intense have ever seen. Captain Schleicher flew the most perfect formation of any in which this crew have participated today. Better mess, present mess is terrible. Stew, stew, then sloppy hash."
