Aircraft history for serial number: 42-95807 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-45-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 3/11/43. Next flown to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 1/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 11/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 11/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 19/2/44. Original 391st BG group aircraft. The pilot Lt. Julian P Alexander was awarded the Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for his part in the Maison Laffitte mission of 27/5/44, when he held the aircraft steady so that they could release bombs after it had been badly damaged by flak over the target area. He then flew the crippled aircraft back to base for a safe landing. The aircraft was repaired. Whilst being flown by Capt. Clyde G Brown, this aircraft hit power lines after take off for a combat mission from Roye/Amy airfield, France to the Communications Centre at Ulbenhoven, Germany, at 0918 hours on 5/10/44. The weather was poor with fog reducing visibility down to 200-400 feet. The pilot made an instrument take-off and a few seconds after becoming airborne collided with the power lines which caused severe damage to the aircraft. On take-off from this runway it is nescessary to climb 200-300 feet per minute to maintain a safe clearence from the terrain. The pilot kept the aircraft under control and climbed straight ahead through the overcast. Being unable to continue on the mission, the pilot salvoed the 4 x 1,000lb bomb load unarmed in an open field and landed safely at A-59, Cormeilles-en-Vexin airfield with the wheels down. None of the crew were injured. The aircraft suffered Cat.3 damage but was repaired. Both wings, nose section, both props, and parts of the fuselage were damaged. The aircraft was damaged again at 1445 hours on 31/10/44 when it ground looped on landing at A-73, Roye / Amy, France whilst being flown by Capt. William N Hollis. The pilot was giving transitional training to 2nd Lt. Clayton A Sprouls. Prior to the accident two landings were made. Apparently the heat generated to the brakes during excessive taxiing overheated the seal in the left bake, causing it to deteriorate. On the last landing on runway 23 the left brake failed, and despite efforts of the pilot, and use of the emergency braking system, it ground looped, ran off the runway and into the embankment of an abandoned gun emplacement, causing damage to one blade of the left propellor. None of the three man crew were injured, and the aircraft which suffered Cat.3 damage was repaired (left prop assembly changed). Crash landed 5 miles north of A-69 Laon-Athies, France on 5/4/45 flown by Clifford F Hocker. The aircraft was damaged Cat.4, and was salvaged on 8/4/45. The aircraft record card lists this aircraft as MIA on 30/3/45, which is an error, listing GLUE 9AF CON MIA on 30/3/45. We have seen a photo of this aircraft in flight, confirming the serial and codes.
