Mission No. 220
8 Feb 1945
Station: A-73
Target: Defended locality at Nutterden, Germany
Time Of Take-Off: 10:30 / Time Over Target: 12:22 / Time Landed: 13:40
55 B-26 aircraft loaded with 16xM81 Fragmentation bombs were dispatched to attack a Defended locality at Nutterden, Germany. Fighters from 2nd Tactical Air Force will be providing area cover.
Weather enroute was 6 to 10/10 low clouds and 10/10 clouds over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute or over the target area. 2 Me-109s were seen below the formation, but they did not engage.
The 1st box attempted to bomb visually on its 1st run, but bombs were released on its 2nd run using GEE. Photos show no bomb bursts but show GEE fix to be accurate. First pictures show bombs in flight and, by calculation of the heading of the bombs and time from release, bombs probably fell about 2 miles ENE of Railroad Junction. Results were rated as UNDETERMINED. Col. Williams (flying as as a spare) flew to the left of the 2nd flight of the 1st box and dropped with this flight.
The 2nd box made 1 visual run and 2 GEE bomb runs but, as they could not get an accurate GEE fix, no attack was made.
The 3rd box made 3 bomb runs. On the 1st run they flew a course to the bomb line but turned left and returned to the I.P. They then went to the GEE IP to make a 2nd run, but the signal went out after 20 seconds. They then came back 1/2 way to IP and made a 3rd run bombing Emmerich. They were escorted out by a formation of Spitfires. No photo coverage or visual observations were available and results were rated as UNDETERMINED.
Jimenez's tail gunner, S/Sgt. Elio Fanucchi, sustained a possible broken arm charging the tail guns in a/c 820-S. Crews reported two ME-109s being chased by two Spitfires in the target area on the 2nd run.
