Mission No. 160
5 Sep 1944
Station: 166
Target: Defensive Positions at Brest and Brest/Pte. De Grand Gouin, France
Time Of Take-Off: 16:49 / Time Over Target: 19:01 / Time Landed: 20:45
Two boxes of 18 B-26 aircraft loaded with 8x500LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack enemy Defensive Positions at Brest and Pte. De Grand Gouin, France. After rendezvous with their fighter escort the formation proceeded onward toward the target. Breeseman in a/c 873 returned from the English coast after experiencing trouble with his left engine.
Weather conditions were 3/10 to 6/10 clouds at 8,000 feet enroute and over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute or over the target area.
A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 1st flight of the 1st box fell 400 feet SE of the Designated Mean Point of Impact with a near hit on a probable gun emplacement and hits on a roadway. A dispersed pattern of bursts from the 2nd flight was seen 800 feet SE of the Designated Mean Point of Impact bracketing 2 probable gun emplacements and a roadway. A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 3rd flight fell 900 feet SE of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across a roadway and in open fields. Results were rated as GOOD, FAIR, and FAIR respectively.
A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 1st flight of the 2nd box fell 200 feet SW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across the Designated Mean Point of Impact with hits on 2 roadway intersections and residential areas. A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 2nd flight fell 200 feet SW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact with hits on 2 roadways and in residential areas. A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 3rd flight fell 4,500 feet NE of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across 4 roadways and on residential areas. Results were rated as EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT, and GROSS respectively.
Three aircraft from the low flight of Box 1 went to Lessay near Cherbourg to refuel (Walter in a/c 740, Cassiday in a/c 841, and Putnam in a/c 634).
Comments about food again featured strongly at debriefing. Transportation on return was also noted to be poor, and it was suggested that drivers should wait at the hardstands for crews.
