Mission No. 71
27 May 1944
Station: 166
Target: Bridge at St. Pierre-du-Vauvray, France
Time Of Take-Off: 12:20 / Time Over Target: 14:18 / Time Landed: 15:17
38 B-26 aircraft were dispatched to attack an enemy Bridge at St. Pierre-du-Vauvray, France. Each aircraft was loaded with 2x2000LB General Purpose bombs with bombing to be done by flights of six aircraft. After take-off, the formation proceeded to Splasher Beacon No. 8 for rendezvous with the 386th Bomb Group and then to Brighton for their rendezvous with their P-47 fighter escort.
The weather conditions were similar to yesterday's mission with a solid undercast of clouds up to 8,000 feet over England, but with conditions changing to excellent after passing over the River Thames. The formation again experienced Heavy, Weak, Inaccurate FLAK as it passed Elbeuf; but none over the target area.
76 bombs were dropped with the results rated as excellent !
At debrief, Koehl's crew commented "One member of this crew has not eaten since 6 PM yesterday. No food available after last night's flight. Two flights on an empty stomach. Only had 35 minutes this morning from time awakened till time to report, hence no breakfast." Dickinson's crew commented "how about a little sleep once in a while."
