Aircraft history for serial number: 42-95832 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-50-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 10/11/43. Next flown by New Castle (2nd Ferry Group), Wilmington, Deleware (from 6/12/43), to Pittsburgh, Ohio (ATC) from 9/12/43. Then flown to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 11/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 6/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 6/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 30/1/44. Original group aircraft flown over from the USA by 1st Lt. Frederick E Bush and crew. Crashed 3 miles South of Matching Green at 1350 hours, shortly after take off on 4/7/44 due to engine failure, flown by 1st Lt. Donald D O'Hare. The aircraft took off from Matching Green loaded with 10 x 100lb bombs on board for a local training mission. Just as the aircraft was becoming airborne the left engine failed completely, and the right prop began to fluctuate wildly. Since the aircraft was not at a speed to ensure control and hold altitude, the pilot selected a grass field and made a text book belly landing on a slight uphill slope. The aircraft slid on its belly for about 150 to 200 yards before crossing a ditch which swung it to the right, tearing off the left engine, and setting the a/c on fire. All the crew received minor injuries, apart from Cpl. Schwisow who suffered major injuries, and was saved by the co-pilot and engineer who were brothers. Both received the service medal for their actions. The a/c was salvaged by the 87th Air Service Squadron on the 5/7/44. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON SAL NBD on 5/7/44. Accident records list this aircraft as 575th BS.
