Mission No. 40
28 Apr 1944
Station: 166
Target: Marshaling Yard at Creil, France
Time Of Take-Off: 07:47 / Time Over Target: 09:38 / Time Landed: 11:15
37 B-26 were dispatched to attack an enemy Marshaling Yard at Creil, France. Aircraft were loaded with 4x1000LB General Purpose bombs. Lt. Alexander in ship 797 returned to base from mid-channel due to a runaway propeller.
Weather conditions enroute and over the target area were poor with 9/10 to 10/10 cloud cover. Bursts of FLAK below the formation were observed over the Dieppe area, but no damage occurred.
34 bombs were dropped in the target area when the bombardier in the 2nd ship of the lead flight accidentally hit the toggle switch, releasing his bombs, and thus causing and a number of other ships to drop. One observer commented that the bombs fell between the lead and 3rd flights of the 2nd box ! Otherwise, the formation was unable to identify the target and returned to base with 118 bombs intact.
Unusually, the regular complaints about food in the interrogation reports for this mission are few, with positive comments suggesting that the mess has improved and that fresh eggs are being served for breakfast !
