Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-45-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 9/11/43. Then listed at Columbus, Ohio (ATC) from 2/12/43, and Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 4/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 7/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 7/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 19/2/44. Original group aircraft ferried over from the USA by the then Major Donald K Brandon. Left engine damaged by Fw-190 fighters on the 23/12/44 Ahrweiler Railway Viaduct mission. According to reports the aircraft was last seen dropping out of formation with the left engine on fire. The pilot, 1st Lt. Bertram L Ryan, Jnr was flying with a new crew, there were no survivors. Engines, P&W, R-2800-43, serials: 42-51315 (left), and, 42-51462 (right). The aircraft had flown 104 combat missions. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, SOXO CON MIA on 23/12/44. We have seen a photo of this aircraft in flight, confirming the serial and codes. |
