Mission No. 182
3 Nov 1944
Station: A-73
Target: RR Bridge at Morschied
Note: the formation was changed to a Pathfinder mission due to bad weather.
A seven span masonry arch single line railroad bridge 400 feet long. There was an enemy concentration of armour North of the bridge. The destruction of this bridge would impede movement into the southern area and the successful bombing of our target would deny the enemy an alternative route.
Thirty-two planes were dispatched on the afternoon of November 3 to bomb the railroad bridge at Morschied, Germany. This mission was designed as a Pathfinder attack, and it was run accordingly to plan, cloud cover being complete in the target area. Thirty-two planes were dispatched, thirty of them dropping one hundred ten 1000-pound bombs and eight 500-pound bombs on the primary target. Two planes failed to bomb, one for personnel and one for mechanical reasons. There were no photo coverage or visual observations of the results and no losses, casualties or battle damage on the mission.
572nd records show Major Earll led box 2 with Lt. Mansfield as bombardier and Lt. Netherton as navigator. Flight 2 of box 2 was led by Lt. Smith with Lt. Thorn as bombardier and Lt. Art as navigator.
