Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-55-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 17/1/44. Next went to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 24/1/44). Then went to Homestead Army Air Field, Florida (from 2/2/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Caribbean Wing), departing the USA on 4/2/44 for the 9th AF. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) from 4/2/44, and, SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 24/2/44. Entered service with the 391st BG / 573rd BS on 7/6/44. The aircraft crashed in farmland at Moons Farm, Norpitts, near Ashingdon, near to the north of the Canewdon Road, 2 miles Northeast of Rochford, Essex (map reference M313126) on 24/9/44 at 2140 hours, whilst returning from a ferry mission to the groups new base at Roye/Amy, France. The aircraft ran into a storm in the late evening having came back from France. They were unable to locate the airfield at Matching Green due to the severe weather and attempting to let down through the overcast crashed. The pilot 2nd Lt. Jack T Hanlon and crew were killed in the crash. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON SAL NBD on 24/9/44. A memorial plaque to the airmen lost in this crash is on display at the Ashingdon and East Hawkwell Memorial Hall, the crash site itself, and at nearby St.Andrews Church. Also listed as P2-X of the 572nd BS, needs confirmation.
