Mission No. 166
12 Sep 1944
Station: 166
Target: Fortified Positions at Chaligny Area, France
Time Of Take-Off: 16:10 / Time Over Target: 18:11 / Time Landed: 20:05
36 B-26 aircraft loaded with 8x500LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack enemy Fortified Positions at the Chaligny Area, France. Fighters from 9th Tactical Air Command will be providing area cover. Lt. Kloepfer in a/c 844 failed to take off due to lack of engine power. Lt. Garwick and crew had to return to base from Clacton-on-Sea when their generators in a/c 847 were overcharging.
Weather enroute was good and no clouds with about 8 miles visibility over the target area.
A dispersed pattern of bombs from the 1st flight of the 1st box fell 2,000 feet S of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across a minor roadway, and in open fields and residential areas. The bombs from the 2nd flight fell in a dispersed pattern 1,000 feet N of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across 3 roadways and in open fields and wooded areas. A dispersed pattern of bursts from the 3rd flight was visible 1 and 3/4 miles NW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact across 2 roadways and in wooded areas. Results were judged to be POOR, FAIR, and GROSS respectively.
The bombs from the 1st flight of the 2nd box fell in a dispersed pattern 2,000 feet SW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact in open fields and wooded areas. A dispersed pattern of bursts from the bombs of the 2nd flight was visible 2,000 feet SSW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact cutting main Railroad line S of target; other hits in open fields and wooded areas. The 3rd flight's bombs fell in a dispersed pattern 250 feet NNW of the Designated Mean Point of Impact with hits on unidentified buildings and in wooded areas and open fields. Results were judged to be POOR, POOR, and EXCELLENT respectively.
The Stanfield crew commented that they should not have been given shots (vaccination?) in their arms just before flying a mission! They and many other crews stated that transportation was poor to the hardstands.
