Mission No. 141
11 Aug 1944
Station: 166
Target: Coastal Guns at Ile de Cezembre, France
Time Of Take-Off: 17:00 / Time Over Target: 18:50 / Time Landed: 20:00
30 B-26 plus 2 Pathfinder aircraft were dispatched to attack enemy Coastal Guns at Ile de Cezembre, France. The 1st box was loaded with 2x2000LB General Purpose bombs, the 2nd box with 3x1600LB Armor Piercing bombs. After rendezvous with their fighter escort the formation proceeded onward toward the target.
Weather enroute was 3/10 to 7/10 clouds over the south coast of England, changing to CAVU over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute and over the target area.
Approximately 2/3 of the bombs from the 1st box fell outside the Target Area (600 feet W from nearest edge of the Target Area) in a dispersed pattern; 1 gun position was blanketed and another received a near hit in the Target Area. A near hit was seen on gun position in area "B". Other bursts are dispersed on the E and S sides of the island and in water.
Bombs from the 2nd box fell in a concentration outside the Target Area (2,000 and 400 feet WNW from nearest edge of the Target Area) in dispersed pattern in the water and at extreme W end of island.
Results were judged to be good to excellent by the crews, although some crews believed that bombing should have been carried out visually rather than by Pathfinder.
