Mission No. 140
10 Aug 1944
Station: 166
Target: Railroad Embankment at Eppenon, France
Time Of Take-Off: 17:50 / Time Over Target: 19:37 / Time Landed: 21:30
36 B-26 aircraft loaded with 2x2000LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack an enemy Railroad Embankment at Eppenon, France. After rendezvous with their fighter escort the formation proceeded onward toward the target. Lt. Sloss in a/c 268 experienced a bomb rack malfunction where one bomb fell from its shackle ! It was salvoed over the French coast and the aircraft returned to base from this point.
Weather conditions enroute were 10/10th clouds from mid-channel to 20 miles inside the French coast. Miraculously, conditions changed to CAVU (Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited) over the target area.
Heavy, Weak, Inaccurate FLAK was encountered enroute but not over the target area. No aircraft sustained battle damage.
The bombs of the 1st flight of the 1st box fell about 450 feet NW of the bomb aiming line in a dispersed pattern in residential areas and in open fields. The 2nd flight's bombs fell across the bomb aiming line in a dispersed pattern with at least 2 possible hits on railroad embankment. Those of the 3rd flight fell about 1,000 feet NW of the bomb aiming line in open fields.
The bombs of the 1st flight of the 2nd box fell about 150 feet SE of the bomb aiming line in a tight pattern with at least 2 hits on the embankment. Bombs from the 2nd flight fell about 150 feet NW of the bomb aiming line in a dispersed pattern across one roadway and in open fields. The 3rd flight's bombs fell about 2 1/4 miles SW of the bomb aiming line in a dispersed pattern in open fields. Results of the photographic interpretation for all 6 flights are recorded as "IB" or "1B" ! Crews judged the results of the bombing to be Good to Excellent.
Many crews commented at debriefing that the mission briefing was too short and hurried. Also noted was that there were no lights in the locker room and that the latrine at the crew room should be cleaned.
