Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-50-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 18/11/43. Next listed at Pittsburgh, Ohio (ATC) from 9/12/43. Then flown to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 13/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 6/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 6/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 19/2/44. Original group aircraft flown overseas by Capt. James H Gilmore and crew. Shot down by flak on 28/7/44. Aircraft crashed in the Thury-Harcourt region in Normandy on route to the target, a railway bridge at Grosley-sur-Risle. The aircraft flown by 1st Lt. Robert H Clark took a direct hit about the waist position and broke in half. Only three of the crew managed to bail out and survive as the two pieces spiralled down, the pilot, 1st Lt George L Parker, the co-pilot, & S/Sgt. John W Sweren, the tail gunner. 1st Lt. Clark flew as co-pilot when the aircraft was originally flown over from the USA. Flew at least 63+ missions. Marked "Priscilla" on the port engine. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON MIA on 29/7/44. |
