Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-50-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 9/11/43. Next flown by New Castle (2nd Ferry Group), Wilmington, Deleware (from 6/12/43), to Patterson Field, Ohio (ATC) from 9/12/43. Then flown to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 11/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 6/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 6/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 30/1/44. Original group aircraft flown over from the USA by 1st Lt. Frank Bernzen, Jnr and crew. Damaged by flak on the 8/6/44 mission to railway junctions at Valognes, near Cherbourg, France and made an emergency landing back at Matching Green on return. The aircraft was repaired by 24/7/44. The aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON AFMSC on 8/6/44, and, GLUE 9AF REPAIRED on 24/7/44. Hit by flak on the 30/3/45 mission to Bad Oyenhausen, Germany. Last seen flying on one engine over Usslen at 2,500 feet. All crew bailed out except pilot, 2nd Lt. Alden B Anderson, and co-pilot, 2nd Lt. Donald M Bergstrom, who crash landed the aircraft. All were captured as POW's. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON MIA on 30/3/45. |
