Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-45-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 31/10/43. Next listed at Lynchburg Municipal Airport, Virginia (ATC) from 30/11/43. Then went to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky (from 1/12/43), and assigned to the 391st BG. Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 5/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 5/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 30/1/44. Original group aircraft flown over from the USA by 2nd Lt. Richard L Alexander in Jan 1944. Collided with 42-95802 (pilot, Capt. David H Thorn) on 25/8/44 returning from the mission to coastal defences at Ponascorff on the Brest Peninsula. The formation were experiencing low fuel reserves, and Capt. Thorn flying deputy lead dropped out of formation to set course for Cherbourg, intending to land at a forward base to refuel. As 2nd Lt. Elma Z Rice the pilot of this aircraft pulled up to regain position on the lead element, Lt. Thorns aircraft appeared under the left wing, and the aircraft collided. Despite Lt. Rice pulling up to avoid contact, the the aircraft's left propeller and wing were damaged by the tail section of Capt. Thorns aircraft as it slid along the left wing. Capt. Thorns aircraft spun down with the tail section broken off, with only one chute spotted. This aircraft flown by Lt. Rice decided to head for an allied landing strip in France after feathering the left prop, but after breaking out of the clouds at 3,000 feet, was fired upon from flak batteries on Jersey & Guernsey which now knocked out the right engine and killed the radio operator Sgt. Melvin C Schuler, Jnr. The tail gunner, Sgt. Thomas W Hume bailed out and survived. The aircraft ditched successfully in the water near Sillon de Talbert at L'Amour off the Brest Peninsula, near Guernsey. The surviving 4 crew took to the liferaft and were picked up by the US Navy destroyer, USS Borum. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON MIA on 26/8/44.
