Aircraft history for serial number: 43-34165 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26G-1-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 18/5/44. Then flown by New Castle (2nd Ferry Group), Wilmington, Deleware (from 6/6/44), to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 6/6/44). Then went to Dow Field, Bangor, Maine (from 13/6/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Northern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 15/6/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF A (Europe - 9th AF) from 14/6/44, and GLUE 9AF G (Europe - 9th AF) from 25/6/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 573rd BS on 14/8/44. Took a direct hit near the target from an 88mm flak shell which exploded under the mid upper turret on the 2/12/44 mission to the defended town of Saarlauten, Germany, which instantly killed the flight engineer / top turret gunner S/Sgt. Jesse M Ellerbee, who was a sustitute engineer standing in for the regular crew member Sgt. Clarence B Altic Jnr. The aircraft was nearly cut in half, with a huge hole in the side and bottom of the fuselage. The flak hit also seriously wounded the radio operator, T/Sgt. James B Sims and wounded the pilot, 1st Lt. Edmund P Dunn. The aircraft was knocked out of formation, and was rocked by another flak burst which further wounded the pilot in the elbow and ankle. The pilot lost consciousness temporarily and the co-pilot, 1st Lt. Edwin H Armstrong took over the controls, joining another flight and continuing onto the target. The bomb bay doors could not be opened as the hydraulic lines were severed. After giving first aid to the pilot, it was deemed he was too badly injured to bail out, so the decision was made to fly back to base. The two pilots managed to fly back to the home field A-73 Roye/Amy with a fighter escort, and made a successful belly landing. The aircraft was so badly damaged that it was salvaged. The pilot was awarder a DFC in March 1945 for his bravery. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON SAL NBD on 2/12/44. We have a couple of photographs of this aircraft showing the extent of the battle damage.
