Aircraft history for serial number: 42-95873 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26B-50-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 19/11/43. Next flown to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 16/12/43). Flown overseas to the UK via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Carribean Wing), departing the USA on 3/1/44. The aircraft record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe - 8th AF) on 3/1/44, and SOXO R (Europe - 8th AF) from 30/1/44. Crashed on take off from A-73, Roye/Amy at 0916 hours on 5/10/44 for the combat mission to the communications centre at Ulbenhoven, Germany. The aircraft flown by 1st Lt. John R Talton was completely destroyed, killing five of the crew. The only survivor was tail gunner, S/Sgt. Arden J Collison, but he was seriously injured. When the formation began to take-off, the visibility of less around one mile, but fog was rolling in, and by the time this aircraft began its take-off run the visibility was down to between 200 and 400 yards. Shortly after it became airborne the aircraft struck a combine working in a field, then collided with high tension cables and crashed about 2 miles NE of Roye/Amy airfield, and caught fire. The initial collision damaged the right propellor and knocked the right engine off its mounting. The runway used for this take-off makes it nescessary to climb 200-300 feet per minute to maintain a safe ground clearance because of the rising terrain and power lines. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON SAL NBD on 6/10/44. We have seen a photo of this aircraft in flight, confirming the serial and codes.
