Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26G-1-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 29/5/44. Then flown by New Castle (2nd Ferry Group), Wilmington, Deleware (from 9/6/44), to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 9/6/44). Then went to Dow Field, Bangor, Maine (from 14/6/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Northern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 30/6/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF A (Europe - 9th AF) from 29/6/44, and GLUE 9AF G (Europe - 9th AF) from 11/7/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 574th BS on 27/8/44, coded 4L-C. Flew 12 combat missions with the 574th BS till 14/10/44, then transferred to the 573rd BS and recoded T6-K. Entered combat with the 573rd BS on 29/10/44. The port engine caught fire just after take off from A-73 Roye/Amy on 11/12/44 for the mission to Aulenbach, Germany. The bomb load was jettisoned 4 miles west of base, then all the crew bailed out. All landed safely except the pilot, 2nd Lt. Lloyd M Clapham, who was killed when his parachute failed to open in time due to the low altitude. The aircraft crashed 5 miles West of the airfield. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON SAL NBD on 11/12/44. |
