Aircraft history for serial number: 43-34361 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26G-5-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 7/7/44. Then flown by Baltimore, Maryland (ATC) from 12/7/44, to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 12/7/44). Next went to Dow Field, Bangor, Maine (from 26/7/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Northern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 1/8/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF G (Europe - 9th AF) from 13/8/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 574th BS on 2/10/44. Shot down by Me-109 and Fw-190 fighters about 3 miles East of Ahrweiler, Germany, after leaving the target on the 2/12/44 Ahrweiler Railway Viaduct mission. The aircraft flown by 1st Lt. Paul M Matus had part of the tail shot away, the left engine knocked out, and the bomb bay set on fire. The elevators were damaged, the radio knocked out, and ammunition started exploding. The aircraft left formation and headed for home losing altitude steadily and still under constant fighter attack. The bombs were salvoed. Then the right engine caught fire, the wheels were lowered and all the crew crew bailed out, except the radio operator, T/Sgt. William C Swanson, and engineer, S/Sgt. Paul Raimonde who were killed when the aircraft crashed in amongst trees in the Schmidheimerforst near Aachen - St. Vith, Germany. Engines, P&W, R-2800-43, serials: FP-063466 (left), and, FP-063530 (right). The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, SOXO CON MIA on 23/12/44.
