The aircraft was hit in the bomb bay blowing a hole in the aircraft. The aircraft flown by 2nd Lt. Charles Wallace Harrington, Jnr dropped out of formation in a dive, then entered a spin and crashed in an open field 500 metres west of Palmersheim, about 5 km south east of Euskirchen, Germany. Four of the crew bailed out and were captured. One crew member was killed when his parachute failed to deploy properly, and the bombardier who was already seriously injured was probably killed when the aircraft crashed.
