Aircraft 407-Z appears in the 1PFS mission records, but the full serial number does not. It's likely that the aircraft was 43-34407, but the records for this aircraft do not show that it was ever assigned to the 1PFS ! Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26G-5-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 20/7/44. Then flown by Baltimore, Maryland (ATC) from 22/7/44, to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 22/7/44). Next went to Dow Field, Bangor, Maine (from 5/8/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK via the Northern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 7/8/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF A (Europe - 9th AF) from 7/8/44, and GLUE 9AF G (Europe - 9th AF) from 13/8/44. Flown overseas by 2nd Lt. Henry J Kelly and crew. The crew went on to serve with the 391st BG / 572nd BS, but the aircraft was assigned to the 344th BG. Entered combat with the 344th BG / 497th BS on 12/9/44, coded 7I-K. Hit by flak on the fourth run over the target, gun positions at Brest Harbour on 14/9/44. The left engine was knocked out by 20mm flak after the formation was forced down to 3,500 feet due to low clouds. The pilot Lt. Jimmy H Kenyon could not keep up with the rest of the formation and made a forced landing at Morlaix airfield, a beach head landing strip, 50 miles east of Brest. The aircraft which was flying on only its second combat mission was declared a write off and abandoned, but the crew were unhurt and flown back to base by another B-26 from the 344th BG three days later. The aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON ON ALS on 17/9/44, and, "Condemned overseas, dated 2/10/44".
