Aircraft history for serial number: 44-67826 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Built at the Glenn L Martin factory at Baltimore, Maryland as a B-26G-15-MA. Accepted by the Army Air Force on 3/10/44. Then flown by Baltimore, Maryland (ATC) from 7/10/44, to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 7/10/44). Next went to Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Florida (1103 BAS) from 14/10/44, from where the aircraft was flown overseas via the Southern Ferry Route, departing the USA on 16/10/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF A (Europe - 9th AF) on 16/10/44, and GLUE 9AF R (Europe - 9th AF) on 27/10/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 574th BS on 23/12/44. Shot down by Me-109 and Fw-190 fighters on the 23/12/44 Ahrweiler Railway Viaduct mission. The aircraft flown by 1st Lt. Warren E Gray was hit in the tail and both engines were knocked out. The pilot was going to attempt to crash land the aircraft, but the terrain prevented this, and he gave the order for the crew to bail out. The bombardier, co-pilot, and pilot managed to bail out and were captured, before the aircraft crashed on a hillside near Ulmen, Germany. The tail gunner, radio operator, and engineer were either killed by enemy fire, or were killed in the crash. This was the aircrafts first mission with a newly appointed crew.
