Transferred from the 344th BG on 22/5/44. The aircraft was coded IH-X with the 1st Pathfinder SQN. Shot down by fighters on 23/12/44 whilst leading the 322nd BG to the target, the Euskirchen Railroad Bridge, Germany. The pilot Capt. Wilbur G Cox and crew were 391st BG / 573rd BS on detachment to the 1st Pathfinder Sqn. The aircraft was attacked at the target, hit in the left engine and set on fire. It went down in flames, crashing near Waxweiler, close to the target area. Although possibly up to three chutes were spotted, only the tail gunner, S/Sgt. Charles John Bohm survived. He was captured by the Germans as a POW. The aircraft had flown 54 combat missions. The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, SOXO CON MIA on 24/12/44. |
