Aircraft history for serial number: 42-107720 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Delivered from the Martin Omaha plant. Next listed at Omaha, Nebraska (ATC) on 27/2/44, and Chanute Field, Illinois (ATC) on 27/2/44. Then went to the 3rd AF staging area at Hunter Field, Savannah, Georgia (from 28/2/44), and then to Homestead Army Air Field, Florida (from 9/3/44), from where the aircraft was flown overseas to the UK as a 9th AF replacement aircraft, via the Southern Ferry Route (Listed as Caribbean Wing), departing the USA on 12/3/44. The record card then lists, SOXO A (Europe) on 12/3/44, and, GLUE 9AF R (Europe) on 20/4/44. Entered combat with the 391st BG / 574th BS on 6/8/44. The aircraft record card then lists, GLUE 9AF on ALS (Advanced Landing Strip) on 26/9/44, and, GLUE 9AF REPAIRED on 27/9/44, but have no other details on this incident. Damaged by fighters on the Ahrweiler mission of 23/12/44, and belly landed back at Roye / Amy, France. Pilot was 2nd Lt. Paul R Woods. Other crew were: 2nd Lt. Spangler, 2nd Lt. McNamara, Cpl. Hancock, Cpl. Lucero, and, Cpl. Christenon. The aircraft was repaired and re-entered combat with the 574th BS on 25/1/45. Shot down by flak on route to the target at 1515 hours on the 10/2/45 mission to Berg / Gladbach, Germany. The aircraft flown by 2nd Lt. Ted E Martin to a direct flak hit in the right wing near Boppard, Germany. The fuel tank exploded, and the wing came off, flipping the aircraft over on its back, and bursting into flames. All the crew were killed when the aircraft spun down and crashed, 3 km east of Rens, 10 km south of Koblenz, Germany. Engines, P&W, R-2800-43, serials: 41-38421 (left), and, FP-061058 (right). The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, GLUE 9AF CON MIA on 11/2/45. Also have this aircraft listed as 4L-K ? Aircraft may have been named "Scolded Dog" ?
