Aircraft history for serial number: 41-31754 (kindly provided by Paul Clouting).
Delivered by air from the Martin Baltimore plant to the 21st BG at MacDill Field, Tampa Bay, Florida (from 24/4/43). Next served as a training aircraft at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (no date given). Suffered a port engine failure and crashed whilst attempting a forced landing, five miles south of Bloomfield, Kentucky at 1615 hours CWT on 11/6/43, killing one crew member. Two others were fatally injured whilst attempting to bail out, and another seriously injured in the crash. The rest of the crew bailed out safely, although some received minor injuries. The aircraft flown by Major Ernest N Junggren had taken off from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on a personnel transport mission to Godman Field, Fort Knox, Kentucky. After passing Asheville, North Carolina, the port engine oil pressure gauge began to fluctuate, but there was no drop in engine performance, so the pilots decided to carry on. Shortly afterwards the engine failed, so the aircraft was trimmed for single engine flight. The bomb bay fuel tank was not able to be jettisoned and the aircraft began to lose altitude. The pilot ordered the crew and passengers to bail out, which they did whilst clearing a large hill. The aircraft then began to sink in a nose up attitude, and stalled just above the treetops, striking the ground tail first, and then pancaked in, bursting into flames. Listed as 391st BG / 573rd BS in training. The aircraft record card states that there were seven on board, 2 were killed, 1 was seriously injured, and 4 were uninjured. Six of the crew managed to bail out. Next listed at Patterson Field, Ohio (from 14/6/43), and Bowman Field, Kentucky (from 18/6/43). The final entry on the aircraft record card lists, "Bowman Field awaiting survey per gain and loss report of 20/6/43". Note, there is no mention on the aircraft record card that this aircraft was converted to a B-26B-20, and just refers to a B-26B-1 model.
