Mission No. 48
7 May 1944
Station: 166
Target: Marshaling Yard at Le Mans, France
Time Of Take-Off: 17:35 / Time Over Target: 19:36 / Time Landed: 21:05
20 B-26 were dispatched to attack an enemy Marshaling Yard at Le Mans, France. Aircraft were loaded with 4x1000LB General Purpose bombs and, as the last mission, with P-38s of Ninth Fighter Command providing fighter escort.
Weather conditions were good enroute and excellent over the target with unlimited visibility.
Although the formation experienced no FLAK or fighter opposition over the target area, Heavy, Moderate, Inaccurate FLAK was encountered in the vicinity of Caen.
As per the last mission, bombing was done by each individual flight and 74 bombs were dropped on the primary target with results judged as: 1st flight - over; 2nd flight - good; 3rd flight - excellent. 6 bombs failed to drop because of bomb rack malfunctions. Lt. Reynolds stated that the bombs in his aircraft did not release because of a bomb rack malfunction, and that this had happened before in the same ship (815).
The 391st group formation was following the 344th group on this mission. Many crews reported that they were unhappy with this as the 344th formation flew a scattered formation, and that they missed the briefed landfall by 10 miles, and also missed the Initial Point for the bomb run ! Requests for back pack type parachutes for pilots and combat mess continue.
