Mission No. 258
17 Mar 1945
Station: A-73
Target: Marshaling Yard at Altenkirchen, Germany
Time Of Take-Off: 09:27 / Time Over Target: 11:11 / Time Landed: 12:26
30 B-26 aircraft plus 3 Window aircraft plus 2 Pathfinder aircraft loaded with 8x500LB General Purpose bombs were dispatched to attack an enemy Marshaling Yard at Altenkirchen, Germany. Friendly ground forces will provide counter battery fire covering entry and withdrawal over enemy troop line. The Intelligence Annex with the Field Order states: To this marshalling yard are coming all enemy troop and supplies transports for the attack against our bridgehead on the east side of the river Rhine. This fact dictates the necessity of extremely accurate bombing. Crews will be briefed to fly return route as carefully as possible to avoid flying over heavily defended friendly troop concentrations.
Weather was 10/10 clouds enroute and over the target area.
No FLAK was encountered enroute or over the target area.
Both boxes bombed on Pathfinder through 10/10 clouds. No photo coverage or visual observations were available. The 3 Window aircraft bombed Hachenberg G-061294 by navigation. Photos show 10/10 clouds and no visual observations were possible.
